Hello Kitty + John Galliano for Vogue Japan.

Ahh summer… time for fall-winter collections! And what’s spectacular about this time is that Dior dares to present theirs in Japanese hi-def.

For the first time in Dior’s history, a slightly rounded model will present a clothing collection; and to make things more dramatic, a model that is pure love.

Mademoiselle Hello Kitty, ever so adorable, will make her runway debut showing the latest designs by John Galliano for Dior.

Her fashion-forward fans will be able to say hello in the May edition of Japanese Vogue, Vogue Nippon, which will include Kitty posing with Galliano while shopping in Paris.

Ah the good life, j’adore.

Sean D'Anconia x Hello Kitty "Hello N.5 – Hello Kitty x Chanel??? ^o^"

Well, it seems to be a dream of many people to see Hello Kitty and Chanel collaborate. I agreed that Kitty-chan needed to be draped in Chanel, without a doubt. I mean, it’s probably what she wears at home when no one is looking…

So to create this… first I sourced an old-school Chanel N.5 Bottle, and drew it. I tried to capture all of those little nuances of the bottle’s feminine shape  where the colors change/fade/flow but still give it thick enough lines to have it as a comic/manga style piece (with a cute factor…but not too cute). The perfume inside has a subtle sparkle effect which you need to see in person to clearly make out.

Kitty-chan and poodle (Coco) are based on a legit Japanese Gotochi Hello Kitty toy that I drew and modified. I combined this with a number of actual Chanel items again drawn or otherwise created from the originals including all three of Kitty-chan’s bags (but the Kitty face/heart was my idea), the belt…and actually the diamond is real, serious piece of jewelry. All the diamonds are real…or were real…still are real…I think…

The Chanel logo is of course not available as a font although there is one decent knock-off. However, I wanted the real thing, and not the modern one either. So I dug deep through vintage Chanel ads and found a black and white one that had the classic, thicker Chanel words. And so I recreated them through a process of tracing the original, and then visually approximating the correct degree of thickness/sharpness to each letter.

In fact, Chanel’s old logo was far cooler and more powerful than the ones I see used these days. The letters were spaced further apart, looked heavier and more…somehow sexy, alluring and in your face. Like the way Coco would have wanted it.

The actual ad slogan – Every Kitty alive wants Hello N.5…every way she can get it…meow!” – was a spin/parody on an old Chanel ad as well. Again from the late 60′s or 70′s.

The “Hello” at the top was the a little more difficult and I ended up going with a thinner version looking more modern, to weight the image properly.

You will also notice that the perfume is measured in apples…like someone else we know…

Her glasses were drawn based on a pair from Chanel that I found and loved. They suited Kitty-chan’s head and ribbon quite well. For Kitty herself, I usually space her eyes and nose a little differently than Sanrio’s standard although its more noticeable in some of my other work. Again, its those little subtle changes that can often make Kitty look a little more mysterious, cuter and add some extra personality to her.

What would Hello Kitty be without her “lovely red ribbon”…well my version is done in sequence, made out of some really hot Parisian-fabric, sparkling with luminescent kitty hallucinogenic dreams…at least in my head…I don’t drink and “art” though…not often anyway…

Paint and splatter effects is both consistent and less than prominent so that the image could remain clean in typical Chanel style.

For the record, Hello Kitty was on official license in this print with Sanrio’s share of the proceeds going to charity. Chanel has not reached out to me yet to champion a Hello Kitty x Chanel collection but I am waiting patiently by the phone…

Sean D'Anconia x Hello Kitty "Hello Kitty goes “native” in Tahiti Kitty!"

By request, I am posting the 3rd Hello Kitty print in my collection (actually it was 1st in order of creation) – Tahiti Kitty! It’s a faux-featurette feating Hello Kitty in Tahiti (as if you didn’t know) and stars all your favorites plus a few new additions to the HK family – Ka Huna & Fripper. Oh yes, I see a big future for Fripper. The guitar by the way, is actually a real Hello Kitty item, which I figured our fave mouthless kitty would most certainly own…Bonus feature is “Not without my Mimi” starring Kitty-Chan’s twin “soul” sister.

Sean D'Anconia x Hello Kitty "Preview pics of “Hello Astro, Kitty Rebel”

It’s all out Cherry Blossom war in this mixed-media Hello Kitty original (acrylic on canvas) to premier at LAB ART’s grand opening on May 12th. Super splattered in Gloomy’s…ketchup? It’s a full on Battle Royal, Kitty-chan style featuring guest stars: Astro Boy, Gloomy, Dunny, Gloomy-Kitty, Kathy, Gloomy-Mimi, Mayumi, Musashi-Kitty chan, Kokeshi & Daruma kitties, and many more!

I’ve also included a unique water reflection – “distorted Gloomy-Kitty” – around the words “Rebel” (created in an interpretive Chanel N.5 style). Cute kimono, origami/washi paper patterns adorn many of the characters, and cherry blossoms can be seen flowing everywhere just above the action.

Sean D'Anconia x Hello Kitty “Hello Oiran” (Memoirs of a Kitty 2)

She’s back by popular demand in her second “faux” feature – it’s Oiran-Kitty Chan, aka Hello Oiran, aka Hello Kitty as an Oiran which some of you think is a geisha (well, she was an Maiko but that ended unfortunately). Actually, believe it or not, true Geisha did not sell their…um…favors…for money. But that’s another story.

Sean D'Anconia x Hello Kitty "Memoires (memoirs) of a Kitty!"

In March 2010, I created some apparel for a Hello Kitty licensee which was a hell-o a lot of fun. Hello Kitty is a perfect pop-cult icon to play with since her personality can go in so many different directions (possibly due to the fact that she never speaks -I mean with no mouth, how could you).

After finishing the apparel side of things, I was asked as a favor to create an art piece to present to Sanrio as a gift. Initially it was going to just be something simple but you know how that works. So I did my research on her whole history/family ties and thought that it would be great to tell her life story, at least the Japanese part of it in one grand print.

I imagined her as the most famous Takarazuka girl in all of Japan, performing and learning her art. Then trajedy strikes and to pay a debt, HK is forced to first become a “Maiko” or apprentice “Geisha” and then later, an Oiran…leaving her dreams of acting behind.

And then so many years later, recounting her life for my imaginary film – Memoirs of a Kitty. I also played with the idea of calling it Memoirs of a Gay Chat since Chat (pronounced “Sha”) is cat in French. But I didn’t think that people would remember that “gay” also meant happy and since I love to stay clear of major controversy in my imaginary films, I passed on that title.

* It seems like Sephora either had the very same ideas as me, or possibly liked mine enough to borrow it for their new collection. Either way it’s nice to see although would be even nicer to see some of my Hello Kitty art come alive one day on an actual product!

Sean D'Anconia x Hello Kitty "Say “Hello” to Koke-Kitty!"

Created to celebrate the 23rd year of LA’s famous Yakitori House – KokeKokko (Little Tokyo), this original print features all of the main chefs and key staff in Hello Kitty disguise.

Special guest stars/details in the “KokeKitty”:  Hi No Tori (Tezuka), Yabuki Joe, Golgo 13, Fuji Junko (on Tomo-san’s phone), Astro Boy/Atomu and of course a plethora of Hello Kitties. The 3 chefs of KokeKokko are also all represented with Morita Kitty-chan standing on the left in blue (with red ribbon on the wrong side), Tomo Kitty-chan in the middle and Pelon Kitty-Chan on the right (with Kathy on his head).

The restaurant itself was faithfully recreated based on several photographs that I took.

Hello Kitty to Issho! Figure: Minase Shizuku

Griffon Enterprise has announced preorder for this adorable figure of Minase Shizuku from the PSP game Hello Kitty to Issho! As you can tell, the game is themed after the popular Hello Kitty franchise.

Minase Shizuku-chan is the moe illustrator Pop's newest girl. Large eyed, pink haired and with a sunny smile, she's a girl who fits Hello Kitty to a pat. The blue and white are staple summer colors, couple everything with the Hello Kitty mascots on her swimsuit and headphones, and here is a perfect picture of moe

Moe doesn't have to be purely cute, there could be a bit of spice. The figure comes with a scooter. So go all the way with Hello Kitty.
