Platinum figure set for record sale 4th December 2006

The world's most expensive Hello Kitty figure is set to go on sale in Tokyo.

The tiny platinum figure is causing a stir of excitement in the city, as it goes on sale for 18.9 million yen.

Hello Kitty maker, Sanrio, has created the figurine out of pure platinum and the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo has been chosen to sell the item.

The 5.6cm-tall figurine, which weighs 590g, is believed to be the most expensive item ever produced in the world famous Hello Kitty range.

While the figurine itself is made of pure platinum, it comes complete with seven different ribbons made of diamonds, rubies and other precious stones, which can be attached to the platinum item.

The figure is currently being displayed by the department store as the centrepiece of its Christmas collection.
